- BEING MUSLIM (2006) by Haroon Siddiqui (signed edition)
Since 9/11, the world has been confronted with the most volatile facets of Islam with little
explanation of how or why these controversial elements developed. Written by one of North
America's most honoured journalists, "Being Muslim" presents an up-front and clear explanation
of this complex and emotion-laden subject.
Although the varying branches of Islam are analyzed and their history outlined, the real focus
of the book is on the present. In speaking about and crossing political, cultural, and religious
divisions, the author offers a unique perspective based on life in Canada, a country in which
diverse groups of people have found a way to live in peace. Aimed at young adults, the book offers
invaluable insight to readers of all ages, cultures, and religious traditions.
- MUHAMMAD: A PROPHET FOR OUR TIME (2006) by Karen Armstrong
The Man Who Inspired the World's Fastest-Growing Religion
Muhammad presents a fascinating portrait of the founder of a religion that continues to change
the course of world history. Muhammad's story is more relevant than ever because it offers
crucial insight into the true origins of an increasingly radicalized Islam. Countering those
who dismiss Islam as fanatical and violent, Armstrong offers a clear, accessible, and balanced
portrait of the central figure of one of the world's great religions.
- CULTURAL SIDE OF ISLAM (2003) by Muhammad Marmaduke Pickthall
This is a compilation of eight scholarly lectures delivered in Chennai (Madras) India in 1926
by Mohammad Marmaduke Pickthall, as part of the famous "Madras Lectures on Islam" series.
Pickthall, better known for his translation of the Holy Qur’an in English, was born in a
Christian family and later, after deep study, embraced Islam and spent a number of years in
India in the service of the erstwhile Nizam of Hyderabad. In these lectures he gave a graphic
picture of different aspects of Islamic culture and establishes its superiority over the Western
Culture.
- UNDERSTANDING THE PALESTINIAN-ISRAELI CONFLICT: A PRIMER (2007) by Phyllis Bennis
If you have ever wondered "Why is there so much violence in the Middle East?," "Who are the
Palestinians anyway?," "What are the occupied territories?" or "What does Israel want?," then
this is the book for you. With straightforward language, Phyllis Bennis, longtime analyst of
the region, answers basic questions about Israel and Israelis, Palestine and Palestinians, the
US and the Middle East, Zionism and anti-Semitism; about complex issues ranging from the Oslo
peace process to the election of Hamas. Together her answers provide a comprehensive understanding
of the long-standing Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
- THE ISLAMIC ART AND ARCHITECTURE (2001) by Sir Thomas Arnold
This book published originally under the title The Legacy of Islam seeks to give an account of
those elements in the culture of Europe which are derived from the Islamic World. The entire gamut
of the components of Islamic Culture, which flourished under the protection and patronage of the
Islamic Empire, during the medieval period, has been studied in detail.

BONUS (given with any book) MECCA AT THE CENTRE OF THE WORLD
This new map was designed especially for the Canadian Islamic Congress by University of Waterloo
(Canada) professor, Dr. Len Guelke.
"A conventional map contains distortions because the world is round and a map is flat,"
explains Prof. Guelke. "Such maps can give a very inaccurate idea of the direction and distance to
Mecca from other places in the world. On this new world map, the direction of Mecca and the shortest
distance is easily measured as a straight line ... It is amazing that Mecca is approximately the
centre of the land mass of the world."
As supplies of all the above items are limited, CIC members and friends are invited to
